SouthCoast Bloodstock is the brainchild of Los Angeles, CA native Rory Callis who in 1996 relocated to Lexington, KY to follow his dream of working with thoroughbred race horses.
Callis started by taking a course on horsemanship at the famed Kentucky Horse Park before fate placed him in the path of Belmont Stakes winning trainer Ken McPeek.
McPeek soon discovered Callis to be a valuable asset to his team and tasked him with scouring thousands of horses at auction and creating a short list of horses for him to evaluate. The rest, as they say, is history.
Below are just a few of many accomplished diamonds in the rough that SouthCoast Bloodstock has plucked from the sales.
Noble’s Promise: Son of Cuvee sold for $10k as a weanling at the Keeneland sale for Chasing Dreams Racing. The talented colt went on to be a stakes winner at 2,3, and 4 taking prestigious races like the Grade 1 Breeders Futurity at Keeneland. His total earnings stand at $1,071,215.
Dream Empress: Rory had this filly selected and helped grab her as a yearling for $60k at the Keeneland sale for Livin the Dream Racing. It proved to be quite an astute purchase as the lass won the Grade 1 Alcibiades and was second in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies. Upon retirement her earnings stood at $773,164.
Midnight Cry: Daughter of Smart Strike was short listed for McPeek Racing. She finished third in the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga as a two-year-old and won the Grade 3 Forward Gal at Gulfstream in her sophomore season. Her career ended with 3 wins from 8 starts and earnings of $213,152.
Connie and Michael: $80k purchase won at first asking by 7 ¾ sprinting from the 12 hole at Keeneland. She failed in her very next race, the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies, but would go on to finish second in the Grade 1 Mother Goose Stakes the following year. Rory short listed this filly.
Striking Dancer: We selected this one as a yearling for Stevestan Stables. Her exciting career includes 5 wins capped with a victory in the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes at Santa Anita. As a royally bred winner on dirt, turf and synthetic the mare will be an exciting broodmare for years to come. She was most recently sold for $750k at the November Fasig-Tipton Sale. She is in foal to Pulpit.
